چکیده
Motivated by the immense success of random walk and Markov chain methods in the design of classical algorithms, we consider quantum walks on graphs. We analyse in detail the behaviour of unbiased quantum walk on the line, with the example of a typical walk, the “Hadamard walk”. We show that after t time steps, the probability distribution on the line induced by the Hadamard walk is almost uniformly distributed over the interval [−t/ √ 2, t/ √ 2]. This implies that the same walk defined on the circle mixes in linear time. This is in direct contrast with the quadratic mixing time for the corresponding classical walk. We conclude by indicating how our techniques may be applied to more general graphs.

Continuous-Time Quantum Walk on the Line
Quantum walks have recently been introduced and investigated, with the hope that they may be useful in constructing new efficient quantum algorithms. For reviews of quantum walks, see Refs. [4, 16, 24]. There are two distinct types of the quantum walk: one is a discrete-time case [2, 5, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23], the other is a continuous-time case [1, 3, 7, 8, 10, 15, 20]. The quantum walk c...

متن کاملTwo-site Quantum Random Walk
We study the measure theory of a two-site quantum random walk. The truncated decoherence functional defines a quantum measure μn on the space of n-paths, and the μn in turn induce a quantum measure μ on the cylinder sets within the space Ω of untruncated paths. Although μ cannot be extended to a continuous quantum measure on the full σ-algebra generated by the cylinder sets, an important questi...
متن کاملEfficient Quantum Walk on the Grid with Multiple Marked Elements
We give a quantum algorithm for finding a marked element on the grid when there are multiple marked elements. Our algorithm uses quadratically fewer steps than a random walk on the grid, ignoring logarithmic factors. This is the first known quantum walk that finds a marked element in a number of steps less than the square-root of the extended hitting time. We also give a new tighter upper bound...
متن کاملOn Some Questions of C. Ampadu Associated with the Quantum Random Walk
We review (not exhaustively) the quantum random walk on the line in various settings, and propose some questions that we believe have not been tackled in the literature. In a sense, this article invites the readers (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), to explore the beautiful area of quantum random walks.
